CBAs: high costs, no benefits

JULY 16 UPDATE: the CBA is being challenged in court by the associations listed below.

John Horgan’s Community Benefits Agreement (CBA) for public infrastructure projects is costing taxpayers hundreds of millions more:

SALMON ARM WEST HIGHWAY

ORIGINAL BUDGET

$163M

(3 PHASES)

NDP BUDGET

$185M

(2 PHASES)

INCREASE

▲13%

CHASE CREEK ROAD HIGHWAY

ORIGINAL BUDGET

$199M

(3 PHASES)

NDP BUDGET

$260M

(2 PHASES)

INCREASE

▲31%

KICKING HORSE CANYON HIGHWAY

ORIGINAL BUDGET

$450M

NDP BUDGET

$601M

INCREASE

▲34%

ILLECILLEWAET HIGHWAY

ORIGINAL BUDGET

$35M

NDP BUDGET

$85M

INCREASE

▲143%

AND THAT'S JUST THE START!

Because the Horgan NDP has given a sweetheart deal to union insiders, cut out 85% of construction workers in BC, and caused these projects to be delayed, BC taxpayers are out $384 MILLION*… SO FAR.

*TOTAL calculated by adding the budget increases of highway projects (listed above), projected 7% budget increase of the Pattullo Bridge project, and decreased federal government contributions toward highway projects because of reduced scope.

WHAT WE COULD BUILD FOR $384M

AT LEAST FIVE NEW SCHOOLS
ONE NEW HOSPITAL
3,000+ AFFORDABLE HOUSING UNITS

WHAT’S NEXT?

The government has already admitted the $1.4B Pattullo Bridge Replacement includes a cost of 7% due to the CBA*. No doubt it will cost more. How much more will the Broadway Subway Project cost over it’s $2.8 billion budget? And then there’s the remainder of the Hwy 1 expansion, the total original budget of which was well over $1 billion?
